Course details:
This course is specifically planned to inspire and widen current or past ceramic practice and to take advantage of building a library of tools and inspiration. It is designed for teachers of art who wish to develop skills in clay work but it is also suitable for potters who wish to extend their knowledge of different techniques.
It will be a concentrated, stimulating and enjoyable expedition into surface textures, decoration, pattern, simple constructions and building techniques. You will gain knowledge of a wide variety of surface decoration and glaze techniques which will include, tool making for sprigging, incised and sgraffito decoration, slip techniques, printing, carved and pressed images, clay and sponge stamps and a variety of oxide, slip, wax & shellac resist methods.
It is intended to extend or refresh experience of ceramic techniques that will help you in your teaching or practice. Themes will be introduced to inspire personal investigation that can be adapted to the school curriculum. Printed notes on techniques will be included.
Sarah Boyle’s own work encompasses both functional pottery and sculptural ceramics. She specialised in Ceramics at Art College and her work has since been shown widely in galleries in the UK and at the Chelsea Flower Show, London.
